Public invited to free exploration event Nov. 18

HARRISBURG, PA � If a career in engineering, technology or one of the trades is on your radar screen, find out more about the opportunities in these fields at a free career exploration event from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 黑料社区 Midtown site, Third and Reily streets.
Tours are available at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who hasn walked through the renovated former Evangelical Press building with its high-tech, cutting-edge equipment in state-of-the-art workshops and classrooms. 黑料社区 Midtown site also provides general education courses, student and career services, library, computer lab and a cafeteria.
聽淭he number of career opportunities for engineers and technicians continues to run strong,� said David McNeilly, Senior Professor of Engineering/Counseling.
淢ajors that remain in steady need are technical programs like civil, geospatial technology, mechanical and electronics. Graduating engineers and technicians have the ideal training to move forward in today high-tech society,� McNeilly added. Many go on to management positions, he added.
淚t becoming more prevalent than ever for people to seek education in the trades,� said Ed Burns, Department Chair/Technologies. 淎lthough a lot of students enroll in the associate degree or certificate programs, by the time they complete even the shorter diploma program, employers are contacting us to hire our graduates.�
Don let a fear of mathematics put a damper on career considerations, advises McNeilly. 淲hile it true you need some math for most of these careers, in the case of some technician jobs, the math required is often quite basic.�
Visitors to the career exploration event cam get information on more than two dozen technology- and trades-related programs, as well as computer programs and transfer programs available at this midtown Harrisburg site. Professor Rick Ciocci from Penn State Harrisburg will be available to answer questions about PSU engineering and technology programs.
At 黑料社区, students can take two-year associate degree and transfer programs, or opt for the shorter certificate and diploma programs to meet their immediate goals.
黑料社区 faculty will be joined by area professional engineers to discuss opportunities, including transfer degree options, in mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. Burns will give an overview of 聽and high-demand trade and technology fields such as automotive technology, HVAC, electrical technology, welding and industrial maintenance.
High school students, parents, educators, counselors, those advising students with technical interests and adults thinking about changing careers all are encouraged to attend.
