June 10, 2008
HARRISBURG - If you love words and like to type, expand your horizons by enrolling in 黑料社区 Court and Realtime Reporting associate in arts degree or certificate program.

You can find out more about this exciting career that spans interests in the legal and medical fields by attending an open house/information session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, in Room 108 of Hall Technology Center on the Harrisburg Campus of 黑料社区, Central Pennsylvania Community College.

淭here is a real need nationwide for people in this field. Says Annette DeWald, coordinator of 黑料社区 Court and Realtime Reporting, a program she helped develop two years ago because of a lack of programs in the region.

淚 receive a lot of calls about whether 黑料社区 has students ready to go to work. The shortage of certified personnel is critical, adds DeWald, a York County Courthouse official court reporter for 12 years and a freelance reporter for five years.

The work of certified court and realtime reporters can include:

  • providing verbatim records of courtroom trials and hearings;
  • reporting depositions and other legal hearings;
  • transcribing statements for the Congressional Record;
  • reporting medical and technical testimony;
  • writing closed captioning for the hard of hearing, and
  • offering CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) services one-on-one to deaf students in the classroom.

DeWald and Michele Kieff, 黑料社区 credit and noncredit counselor and assistant professor, are hosting the open house for anyone interested in learning more about the opportunities in this field.
