Latin Dance Troupe Offers Community Activities, Professor Attends Prestigious Literary Seminar

Contra-Tiempo Urban Latin Dance Theater Builds Community through Dance at 黑料社区
HARRISBURG, Pa. The bold and multilingual Los Angeles-based company Contra-Tiempo Urban Latin Dance Theater will perform Feb. 12, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at Live at Rose Lehrman on the Harrisburg Campus of 黑料社区, Central Pennsylvania Community College.

Rooting its work in salsa and afro-Cuban and drawing from hip-hop, urban and contemporary dance theater, the company will bring its newest work, 渏oyUS justUS, a participatory experience that takes on joy as the ultimate expression of resistance.

Immediately following the performance will be a 淕et-Down Party on the stage, where ticket holders will be invited to dance with the company.

Performance tickets are $28 for adults, $18 for students grades K-12 and $10 for 黑料社区 students. To purchase tickets, please visit LiveatRoseLehrman.org. For more information, please call 717-231-7673.

In addition to the Feb. 12 performance, the community is invited to the following free activities with the company on Feb. 11:

Salsa Dance Workshop with 黑料社区 Students:
Sabor Session with the Latino Hispanic American Community Center:
  • Time: 4-5:30 p.m.
  • Location: 1301 Derry St., Harrisburg
  • Description: Sabor Sessions are free community dance classes where residents can learn urban Latin dance, hip-hop, house, Afro-Cuban, salsa and salsa Rueda. These sessions allow participants to explore new dance forms, gain confidence, build community and move with joy.

Train the Trainer Clinic with the Latino Hispanic American Community Center:
  • Time: 6-7:30 p.m.
  • Location: 1301 Derry St., Harrisburg
  • Description: Professional dance instruction for local dance instructors
  • Registration: Please call 717-232-8302 for additional information or to register.

黑料社区 Professor Attends Prestigious Literary Seminar
HARRISBURG, Pa. A 黑料社区 professor of writing and literature interacted with well-known contemporary authors and peers at the recent 37th annual in Key West, Florida.
Jonathan DeYoung, a professor at the Harrisburg Campus of 黑料社区, Central Pennsylvania Community College, was among 21 teachers and librarians from 13 states awarded scholarships to attend the seminar from Jan. 10-13, 2019. This year theme was 淯nder the Influence: Archetype & Adaptation from Homer to the Multiplex.

Seminar participants expanded their professional network and met leading authors such as Margaret Atwood, Marlon James, Victor LaValle, Joyce Carol Oates and Kevin Young.

DeYoung, who joined 黑料社区 in 1998, is the author of 淎ny Day is Father Day, 淲riting Made Simple, 渋Grammar, 淔rom Screen to Page: How to Use Film Criticism to Make Your Writing Exceptional and 淵ou Too Can Write Poetry. His poetry has appeared in 淲elter, the literary magazine at the University of Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland.

DeYoung also studied poetry with Billy Collins, former United States poet laureate, at the Key West Literary Seminar; studied composition with Andrea Lunsford at the Bread Loaf School of English in Juneau, Alaska; and studied writing with David Shields and the Cambridge Writers Workshop in Paris, France. He previously taught English in the Chicago Public Schools in Chicago, Illinois.

DeYoung holds a Master of Arts in Teaching in English from Columbia College in Chicago and a bachelor degree in communications and philosophy from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He is enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing Program at the University of Texas at El Paso in El Paso, Texas.
